Will Everyone Know I Have Filed a Bankruptcy Case?
Unless you are a “high profile” individual whose daily business is generally reported in the media, your bankruptcy proceeding will probably be known only to you, the court and your creditors. Yes, the case is technically a matter of public record, in that the court’s record of your case is available upon inquiry. But neither the law nor the court provide a method or otherwise require you to notify anyone other than your creditors. Nor does the media have any motive to make news out of individuals’ routine filing. Therefore, unless they are also creditors of yours, it is highly unlikely that employers, friends, relatives or neighbors will happen to find out, unless you tell them.
Moreover, anything you disclose to your bankruptcy attorney will remain confidential. Therefore, and especially the more complex your financial issues, it makes sense to contact an attorney in the strictest of confidence.
